Take a look at some of Una's work and a few details on how she created these pieces.

Squiggle and Dots Rug

Size: 20" x 32"

This is a Fiber Muze design found exclusively at Wooly Walkers. We punched this rug with worsted weight yarn using an Oxford #9 regular point punch.

A great mix of colors was used to create the organic feel. A fun way to use up all sorts of bits and pieces you may already have!

Punched on Monk's Cloth with a #14 fine point Oxford needle, this advanced technique piece was created with five shades of sport weight yarn, used doubled up in the #14 needle. The technique used to obtain the fine shading involves "fingering" the rows of changing colors of yarn as they are punched, which results in a gradual blend of the different shades.

Rising

Size: 19" x 26"

This rug was created using an Oxford #8 regular point needle, using the 'Stem Stitch' technique. The material used to punch this rug is cotton jersey that is a waste product from a manufacturer of Organic Mattresses. I dyed the fabric, cut it into 1" strips, and pull them to form a "yarn". Contrary to popular belief, I did not plan the overall visual outcome of the rug, It was happenstance the way the colors emerged, though I did keep the fabric strips in order

Branch

Size: 12" x 12"

One of a Kind

Most of my work involves multiple strands and varying needle/pile heights. The background here was punched with a single strand of bulky yarn in a #13 regular Oxford Punch Needle. The branches and leaves were punched with varying yarn weights using the #8, #9, and #10 regular Oxford needles. The border uses the same needles, but incorporates the "Beadstitch", using the Walker method of multiple colors in the needle and the seed stitch to create a faux beadstitch.

Florals 1-6 Rug

Size: 24" x 36"

This rug is made up of six 12" x 12" designs that were separately punched and then sown together. The individual squares also make great chair pads, pillow tops, of bags. They can also be sewn in a 1 x 6 pattern to create a runner.

Roots

I love exploring negative space and wanted the object to stand out in an unconventional way, so that the observer can decide where to look.

I also played with the direction of the background to further enhance the movement of the piece.

This was punched using the #9 regular and #13 fine point Oxford Punch Needles. The "roots" were attached using the Proddy method and are a 3-ply rug yarn with beads that were sewn on.

Multi-Level

Size: 12" x 12"

One of a Kind

This piece was created with worsted weight yarn using ALL of the different sizes of the Oxford Punch Needle in sequential order to create a sculpted effect. For example, the orange spiral in the upper right corner was punched with the longest needle (#8) and then on each side of the orange spiral the work is punched with successively shorter needles making the object stand out.

Paisley Rose Rug

Size: 20" x 32"

Paisley Rose was created using two different punches; #9 regular and #13 fine point. The background was punched in a lower pile (#13 fine) which added dimension to the rug. The border was also punched with the #13 fine, and you can see a video on my YouTube channel which demonstrates how the border was punched. All the yarn used was worsted weight.

Using all fabric, this design was punched with a #10 regular Oxford needle and torn cotton cloth, wool strips, and cotton jersey "yarn". The edges were crocheted, and a quick video on that technique can be found on my YouTube channel.
